To make conversion easier make your own ruler in 1/12 inches by using your MS Excel program.
 
Highlight columns A thru BT
Right click select column width
Make the width of the column 1.29
The result of the total of those highlighted columns is 6"
Each column will then equal 1/12" making each column 1 foot in real life.

 

 

The other thing this grid is handy for is to "measure up" your quarter scale minis. Each square above should be ¼" square. That, in our grown up world is equal to 1 foot square.
 
Although much of quarter scale is illusion, it is best to stick to the basic sizes when it comes to our furnishings. Rugs, pictures and accessory items vary so much in size that it is impossible to say that each has a certain size-eye appeal rules here.
 
Before going any further it must be said that many times reducing items to actual quarter scale is nearly impossible and that if done accurately the item would not be authentic looking if discernable at all. This is where illusion and creativity enters our hobby.
 
 
 
When it comes to our furniture size is important and the truer you are to the scale the better your end project will look. To this end I have included a list of the average measurements for the average furnishings.
For the sake of eyesight and sanity the measurements have been converted to the closest 1/16"

 The above measurements given for the real life sizes are average. Each manufacture will vary their version of the same piece of furniture. If you are making furniture for quarter scale you will be well within the average size if you use the Quarter Scale conversion column.



 Some common items we make and quite frequently ask

"What size it is in quarter scale"…. The following are close approximates.

 

  • Counter tiles….real life is 3" squares = 1/16"

  • Shower stall….Real life is about 48" square by 6' = 2" sq by 2 ½" H

  • Bathroom counters are 30" high = 5/8"

  • Walls are usually 4" thick = 1/3" or 4/12"

  • Doors are 7'6" H x 3' W = 1 7/8" H by ¾" wide

  • Ceiling heights….8 - 12 feet = 2" - 3"

A nickel is 3' 3" (39"0 across in quarter scale
A quarter is 3' 9" (45") across in quarter scale
